Writers Guild Strike Ends but What of SAG-AFTRA Strike?

Initial reports are the dispute between writers & studio management is resolved. But at what cost to middle income workers who exhausted nest-eggs contrast mega-actors unaffected.

Currently only TV talk shows without actors can begin production again. 

The SAG-AFTRA strike began July 17th, 2023 when the union representing 160,000 Hollywood actors went on strike after failing to come to an agreement with Hollywood's largest studio representatives.  The SAG-AFTRA union joined the 11,000 Writers Guild who began their strike in May. Previous lengthy strikes by SAG-AFTRA:

  • 1988 lasted 188 days
  • 2000 lasted 180 days
  • 1936 - first strike. Issue: "use of US Army and Navy involvement in motion picture production" 

Affected:

  • >40 movies in production
  • 30 TV shows/series + 5 completed but not released
  • An additional 6 new media style productions
  • 19 movies completed but not released

Unaffected:

  • >500 movies in production that are covered by AMPTP 
  • Journalists
  • SAG-AFTRA members working under contracts negotiated by the union separately from the AMPTP contracts

Cost?  >$5million to studio's in NY & CA
