The highlights of AB418 (authored by a San Fernando Valley Assemblyman Jesse Gabriel) are:

  • Commences January 1, 2027
  • would prohibit a person or entity from manufacturing, selling, delivering, distributing, holding, or offering for sale, in commerce a food product for human consumption that contains any specified substance, including, among others,
    • brominated vegetable oil and red dye 3
  • Violation of these provisions punishable by a civil penalty
    • not to exceed $5,000 for a first violation
    • not to exceed $10,000 for each subsequent violation
    • upon an action brought by the Attorney General, a city attorney, a county counsel, or a district attorney.

“The Governor’s signature today represents a huge step forward in our effort to protect children and families in California from dangerous and toxic chemicals in our food supply,” Gabriel said in a statement Saturday."

Contrast SB331 - which has not been signed by the Governor.

SECTION 1.

This act shall be known, and may be cited, as Piqui’s Law: Keeping Children Safe from Family Violence Act.
