Café LA Food Services / Home (lausd.org)

  • Operates one of the largest School Breakfast Programs
  • Second largest National School Lunch Program in the United States
  • Serves over 100 million meals a year, which includes over 530,000 meals each day
    • 225,000 breakfasts per day
    • 255,000 lunches per day
    • 45,000 supper and snack meals per day
    • 240,000 summer meals per day
  • Under California's Universal Meals Program, all students can get breakfast and lunch free of charge daily. 
    • In 2022, California Education Code (EC) sections 49501.5 and 49564.3 were enacted, establishing the UMP, which updated the state meal mandate and required high poverty schools to apply for a federal provision, such as the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) or Provision 2.
    • In School Year (SY) 2022–23, California became the first state to implement a statewide Universal Meals Program for school children.

    LAUSD is a Community Eligibility Program District, where more than 81% of students qualify for free or reduced-price meals. Food Services plays a vital role in providing nutritional support to many students whose main source of nourishment may be Café LA.

    California EC Section 49501.5 requires public school districts, county offices of education, and charter schools serving students in grades transitional kindergarten through grade 12 (TK–12) to provide two meals free of charge (breakfast and lunch) during each school day to students requesting a meal, regardless of their free or reduced-price meal eligibility.
