Tsunami Hazard Area -The Tsunami Hazard Area (shaded yellow on map) was prepared to assist cities and counties in identifying their tsunami hazard for tsunami response planning. The hazard area represents the maximum considered tsunami runup from several extreme, infrequent, and realistic tsunami sources. These data are intended for local jurisdictional, coastal emergency planning uses only.

Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) - Official tsunami warning capability in the U.S. began in 1949 as a response to the 1946 tsunami generated in the Aleutian Islands that devastated Hilo. The U.S. federal government already had a sizable piece of property in ʻEwa Beach to house the Honolulu Geomagnetic Observatory. The Tsunami Warning Center was co-located with this facility, which is maintained by PTWC staff today.

On average, two tsunamis cause damage near their source each year
The December 26, 2004 earthquake, with a magnitude 9.1, occurred off the coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra in the Indian Ocean. It generated a tsunami with a 167 feet (51 meters) height. Flood occurred up to three miles (five kilometers) inland.
