Cal Fire estimates >5,000 structures (426+ homes) were destroyed in Pacific Palisades. There is no distinction, of homes, in Altadena yet, where >7,000 structures were destroyed.
Many small business owners also lived in the two communities engulfed by fire, as did their employees. Suddenly many people are without home and income. Additionally, larger employers, fire department and law enforcement, educators, municipal workers and elected officials had their home severely damaged or completely destroyed.
NASA-JPL, which had reduced their staff by 325 employees in Nov 2024, and 500 in Feb 2024, had 5500 employees at the time of the fire; of which 1000 were initially evacuated and 150 lost homes completely and another 50 will be displaced.
Here is one story from a post on the employee/employer social media site LinkedIn, by Spencer Koo. It has generated 5,173 affirmations ("likes" etc), 427 comments, and 606 reposts.
Please remember the outpouring of care, donations, and prayers exhibited these first two weeks after the fires needs to be renewed in the months ahead as those who lost everything navigate the decisions to rebuild...or not, as well as their families to maintain hopefulness.
