Restoring 16 Fire Dept Employees in Supply & Maintenance Division

Image

50% of the LAFD Engine trucks were out of commission prior & during the Pacific Palisades fire but power to water pumps for hydrants & pressure garnered more attention.

Only the RESEDA NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL has submitted a Community Impact Statement 1/24/25 concerning the inactive LAFD engine trucks.

  • It is crucial that Los Angeles maintains a higher fleet availability rate than we currently do in order to be able to respond to the City’s ever-increasing need of the fire department.
  • Please fund the maintenance positions requested by the Fire Department immediately.

Would the submission of a Community Impact Statement from more neighborhood councils elevate the importance and timeliness of restoring the 16 Fire Dept Employees in the Supply & Maintenance Division?

If the request in September for additional funding, with itemization, had received public attention would the need for private funds have been triggered and generated?

The Board of Fire Commissioners September 17, 2024 report was received by two City Council Committees Sept 19th then again Oct. 1st.

An interim budget request for Fleet Maintenance Operation was submitted Oct. 1st and sent to the same two City Council Committees as the September 17th report.

Both reports returned to the same two committees 12/13/24.

    • It is crucial that Los Angeles maintains a higher fleet availability rate than we currently do in order to be able to respond to the City’s ever-increasing need of the fire department.
    • The Reseda Neighborhood Council encourages the City Council to practice thinking about the budget holistically. It does not make sense to invest in multimillion dollar life saving vehicles, but divest from their maintenance and routine care. Heavy equipment requires specialty knowledge to maintain performance.
It has been reported that firefighters who answered the recall notice at the beginning of the Palisades and Eaton Fire did not have an adequate number of trucks for the amount of firefighters that responded to the call. Please fund the maintenance positions requested by the Fire Department immediately.

This community impact statement was passed in a meeting held in accordance with the Brown
Act on January 21, 2025 with a vote count of 10 yes, 0 no, 0 abstain, and 0 ineligible.

Additionally, a Dec. 17th letter to Mayor Bass detailed the jeopardy the City was in as a result of the $7 million cuts. The details were within the letter LAFD Chief Crowly had sent to the Fire Commission. SKM_C550i24121811410
