Independent fabric stores in the San Fernando Valley have all but disappeared. While Quilt Emporium offers traditional quilting fabrics there are scattered across the Valley stores which replicate independent retailers in the garment district, with full length bolts on tubes rather than rectangular shaped cardboard carriers. These stores offer a wider assortment of fabric for garments, upholstery, and handbags. Lastly, estate sales i̶s̶ are a unique but unstable resource for vintage and "stash" fabrics.
Cleveland Fabrics was established in 1943, but it was twenty years later they took on the name Jo-Ann Fabrics. They enter the stock-market, publicly traded environment, in 1969. Eventually they bought up other competitors such as Cloth-World in 1994, with 342 stores. and House of Fabrics in 1998, at which time they change their name to Joann Stores. Walmart continues to offer cut-to-specification and pre-cut fabric and only recently has Michaels expanded their prepackaged fabric line to on-the-bolt.

If the list of eight stores in and adjacent to the San Fernando Valley does not change, then the nearest stores for San Fernando Valley residents will be in Thousand Oaks, Palmdale, or Los Angeles (La Cienega).
