Ed Feulner Remembered: Founding Board Chair of Pepperdine School of Public Policy

Ed's passing helps us all understand in new ways the importance of builders...he'll continue to live on ...through the very real and important institutions he built, or helped to build...

A statement from the Dean of the School of Public Policy, Pete Peterson, at Pepperdine University included:

"Many of you have heard the news of Ed Feulner's passing last Friday. While his remarkable career had such a significant impact on Washington, DC, his loss is acutely felt here in Malibu.

Ed was SPP's founding Board Chair, serving in that leadership role for over a decade. As one of our current Board members, Mike Warder, remembers,

"Ed, among his many attributes, had a sense of duty to his many different responsibilities that he acquired along the way. He worked tirelessly. He never failed to make the flight from DC to Pepperdine to lead our Board meetings and to connect the School of Public Policy to his extraordinary network of movers and shakers in the world of public policy." He was one of SPP's "founding fathers."

Ed continued as an engaged Board member until his death. My last note of encouragement from him came a month ago, resulting from the announcement of our new MA, Middle East Policy Studies, which will be offered at Pepperdine's Washington, DC campus.

Pete, Congratulations.....We really need an enhanced Pepperdine presence here in the Nation’s Capital.  I’ve been proud to be a part of the SPP from its very beginning, and am most enthused about this latest achievement.

Congratulations to you and your entire team.

Onward! Ed

Ed was also a friend, and mentor of mine. We became much closer in recent years. Beyond his Board service, Ed also served on a couple ad hoc committees I assembled for two important projects here at SPP. His counsel was always invaluable. I'll be forever grateful for his gracious and steadfast encouragement in notes, phone calls, and meetings. My usual signature - "Looking forward" - is an ode to his positive salutation, "Onward!".

Ed's passing helps us all understand in new ways the importance of builders. While we'll/I'll miss him greatly, he'll continue to live on - not only in our memories - but also through the very real and important institutions he built, or helped to build...
