Today at 2:01pm a small 1/2 acre vegetation fire in the Sylvia Park neighborhood near Topanga Canyon Blvd. & Santa maria Rd. The fire rapidly expanded, requiring FS 84; Batt 17; Valley Bureau to ask for additional resources. Map: https://bit.ly/3Ydft2C; Currently LA City & County Fire Department personnel are working to extinguish the fire in the hottest part of the afternoon with over 90° temperatures.
Topanga Canyon Boulevard was closed between Pacific Coast Highway and Mulholland Drive but CHP tweeted at 4:01 it was reopened.
Within a half hour seven acres had burned and by 3pm reports suggested fifty acres had burned. However, by 4pm the City of Malibu disputed the 50 acre assessment saying it is only 10 acres. The City of Calabasas shortly after tweeted "City of Calabasas@CityofCalabasas·15m#OwenFire update: 4:03pm image from Alert CA webcam. Things are looking much better. Way to go, firefighters."
The location is near Cafe on 27, Topanga Living Cafe, as well as a mile north of Will Geer's Theatricum Botanicum. No structures are listed at risk.

Four years ago, July 19th, the Flores fire, seven miles southwest of today's fire, rapidly expanded to 15 acres qualifying it as a second-alarm fire. The initial report of the fire was at 3:01pm, it was "stopped in 1 hour & 56 minutes... There was one minor injury to a firefighter and no civilian injuries reported." Resources used include: 195 firefighters committed in the air & on the ground, @LACoFireAirOps water dropping helicopters, and fixed wing retardant dropping aircraft inbound to battle the blaze.
