President's Day - How We Got Here

It was the 1971 Uniform Monday Law which eliminated the acknowledgement of Washington & Lincoln's birthdates as a federal holiday so as to include all Presidents.

George Washington's birthdate, February 22nd, was originally celebrated after his death in 1799, it became a federal holiday in 1879, the first honoring a person. However, only those government employees in Washington DC were observing it as such; until 1885 when it became a national federal employee holiday.

There are two online events emanating from Washington DC for President's Day:

Wednesday, February 22, at 1 p.m. Eastern Time

It was the 1971 Uniform Monday Law which eliminated the acknowledgement of Washington & Lincoln's birthdates as a federal holiday. However, because Congress never followed with legislation, the holiday is still called “Washington’s Birthday ”, in Federal applications!

Uniform Monday Law was signed into law on June 1, 1968, effective January 1, 1971 it created long weekends with three days off ending with the holidays. There are eleven federal holidays, seven affected by the Monday Law, the remaining four stayed the same: Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day.

Forty-one states have a state holiday on the same date; predominantly called “Presidents' Day” or “Washington's Birthday”.
