NASA granted CSUN $3million in 2019 spanning 3 years "to establish a multidisciplinary research center at the university to study all aspects of increasingly autonomous (IA) systems.
CSUN Data Science & Artificial Intelligence Research Group has been the research home of faculty mentors, graduate and undergraduate students at CSUN since 2021. It is a part of the College Engineering & Data Sciences and Department of Computer Science.

While the Research Group was formed during the Covid lockdown, most educational facilities were operating virtually.
