L.A. City Council Looks at Powerline Undergrounding

A L.A. City Council motion to look at the feasibility & implementation of a tiered system for undergrounding powerlines loses power as it is bounced across three committees in two weeks.

A motion was made 1/14/25  by  Council member Monica Rodriguez 

for the L.A. Dept. of Water & Power with the assistance of any needed department or government agency, be INSTRUCTED to report back on the feasibility and implementation of a tiered system for undergrounding powerlines. This report should also include the following information:"  

  • Criteria for prioritizing areas for undergrounding, such as risk factors like Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones;
  • A detailed cost analysis, including projected costs for different tiers, potential funding options, and the impact on utility rates and customers; and
  • Strategies for community input and stakeholder engagement processes;

And then two weeks pass as the motion is bounced to three different committees.

  • 1/14/25 Motion referred to Energy and Environment Committee; Public Safety Committee.
  • 1/27/25 Corrected Referral per Council President to change referral to Ad Hoc Committee for LA Recovery.
  • 1/31/25 Corrected Referral per Council President to include Energy and Environment Committee.
