Anniversary Series: Griffith Observatory 90 years!

Since the doors opened in 1935, Griffith Observatory has become the most-visited public observatory in the world.

 The Observatory’s history starts with the vision of one man and reflects the invention, innovation, and inspiration that also characterize Los Angeles.  Observatory History - Griffith Observatory - Southern California’s gateway to the cosmos!   The official celebration was May 14th, 2025. 

  • Explore the Observatory in a whole new way! This free downloadable map for Minecraft Java (on Windows, Mac, and Linux) allows visitors to engage with a unique, virtual version of Griffith Observatory in first-person.   • April 17th - In celebration of the 90th anniversary, a special presentation of "All Space Considered" showed the Griffith Observatory as it once was — way back in the 1930s!  ALL SPACE CONSIDERED | APRIL 2025 | GRIFFITH OBSERVATORY
  • October 21, 2023 ·On this day in 1923, the first star projector, Zeiss Mark I of @zeissgroup, made its world debut, and the planetarium was born. For 100 years, star projectors have captivated audiences with stunning and awe-inspiring night-sky projections. Star projectors like the top-caliber Zeiss Universarium Mark IX, the model that currently performs everyday in Griffith Observatory’s Samuel Oschin Planetarium, can simulate an accurate sky from anywhere in the world at any time in history.

Griffith Observatory is owned and operated as a public service by the City of Los Angeles, Department of Recreation and Parks. You can support the Observatory’s programs by donating to Griffith Observatory Foundation.   The mission of the Griffith Observatory Foundation is to support and promote Griffith Observatory as a home for science literacy, education, and public astronomy through resource development and advocacy in partnership with the community.  Support - Griffith Observatory - Southern California’s gateway to the cosmos!

VISITOR NOTICE: Griffith Observatory’s lawn is closed for restoration through November 21. The Observatory building and sidewalk access remain open as usual.  The previous closure for work was in 2002 " ...for a comprehensive renovation and expansion, the first major capital improvement to the building since it opened in 1935.
