"Our UFCW bargaining team has reached a tentative agreement with Albertsons/Vons/Pavilions and Ralphs.

This historic agreement is the direct result of your actions, delegations, conversations with co-workers and customers, and ultimately, your decision to fight for the contract you deserve.

This member-led deal would not have been possible without the strength of the 60,000 members behind us at the table."

Further qualifiers include the necessity for the members to vote on ratification, including

UFCW staff from all over the country are being sent in to assist with ratification votes.

The 2003-2004 Southern California grocery strike lasted 141 days.

Costs resulting from the strike include:

  • $2 Billion by the same stores targeted in 2022 Albertsons/Vons/Pavilions and Ralphs.
  • Market share owned by those stores was diverted to
    • Whole Foods
    • Trader Joes
    • Dollar Stores (and similar markets)
    • Target
    • Walmart
    • Costco
  • $300 million in striking workers wages

After 18 years the participation bank has decreased from 70,000 to 47,000-60,000 despite a larger geographical draw: all of California in 2022 vs Southern California in 2003-2004.

It is these factors which may be a consideration of union members when they vote.

The Union website suggested a list of federal charges they filed against Ralphs and Albertsons/Vons/Pavilions as an additional factor leveraging a basis for the strike.

  • Ralphs and Albertsons/Vons/Pavilions have been offering workers bonuses instead of bargaining for wage increases at the bargaining table, a form of direct dealing.
  • Albertsons/Vons/Pavilions has been unlawfully surveilling workers who have been protesting low wages and short hours, trying to prevent those employees from getting their message out to the public.
  • Ralphs has refused to provide critical information requested and needed for negotiations.
  • Albertsons/Vons/Pavilions has been intimidating members by telling them they cannot discuss union activity.
  • Ralphs has been outsourcing food preparation work to ‘ghost kitchens’ run by non-union outside companies.
