The US Patent & Trademark Office has five no-cost online training/informative events between August 12th and 14th to aid in understanding the patent/trademark process.

August 12

A day in the life of a USPTO patent examiner 1 p.m. ET
Learn more about the USPTO patent examiner position, life at our agency, and why this position may be right for you.  Do you want to use your STEM background to make an impact on the protection of intellectual property and bring ideas to market?

Trademark Basics Boot Camp, Module 7: Keeping your registration alive 2 p.m. ET
In this module, we'll focus on what happens after registration, including mandatory filings to keep your registration alive. 

This module will cover the following topics:

  • Trademark basics
  • Required post-registration filings
  • Optional post-registration filings
  • Examination of post-registration filings
  • Finding help

Attend DOCX filing training 2 p.m. ET
Learn to navigate filing and retrieving your documents in DOCX format using Patent Center. We will provide information, conduct demonstrations, and answer any questions. 

You will hear from experts on the USPTO's eCommerce Modernization (eMod) team, who will provide demonstrations and answer your questions.

USPTO Hour: Patent Trial and Appeal Board updates noon ET
Join us to hear members of the Patent Trial and Appeal Board discuss the bifurcated process for whether to institute an AIA trial proceeding based upon discretionary and merit considerations.

August 14

The Path to a Patent, Part V: Understanding the role of claims in a patent application
2 p.m. ET
In part five of this eight-part recurring series, we'll discuss the parts of a claim, show examples of claim illustrations from issued U.S. patents, and help participants understand how a patent examiner views a claim.

To get the most out of this workshop, you should have an intermediate knowledge of the intellectual property (IP) system and of patents specifically. We recommend that you complete the previous sessions, Part I: IP basics and Part IV: Learn how to draft your patent application before attending.
