Bob Selleck's Impact on the San Fernando Valley

It was the Selleck Company for Real Estate Development and Consultation, based in Westlake Village, that is credited with reviving the former General Motors plant in Van Nuys. The development of a shopping complex on that site has had a major effect on the economic revitalization of the area.

The GM Plant in Van Nuys was opened in December 1947 and closed in 1992. It open with 1,108 employees and closed with 2,600 employees at the 90+acre site. Los Angeles became the second largest auto-producing city after Detroit. The reaction to the closure of the Plant including Ed Asner and Jesse Jackson heading up protests.

The facility was demolished in 1998 and in its place L.A. City Fire Station #81, Selleck’s retail complex with 35 stores, and a 27 acre test track facility for General Motors.

The shopping complex was named “The Plant” as a nod to its 45 year history.
