Los Angeles City Councilmember Nury Martinez resigned over disparaging remarks of Americans, Californians, Angelinos with African heritage in addition to demeaning the child of a fellow member. It was an anonymous "hot mike" recording which surfaced a year later which publicized the inflammatory comments. She resigned after the scheduled election and a special (costly) election. The April 4th special election has 7 candidates qualified to appear on a March ballot (an additional write-in candidate is vying for the seat). None of the candidates have pursued identifying the party for the non-partisan City Council seat.
