Passover 2022 Overlaps Ramadan as well as Western & Eastern Orthodox Easter 2022 Celebrations

This year three different religions overlap the dates for the observation of crucial holidays.

Ramadan in 2022 begins April 2nd and concludes May 2nd

    • Ramadan is remembered as the month in which the prophet Muhammad received the first of the revelations that make up the Quran.
    • Ramadan is determined based on a lunar calendar
      • Months begin when the first crescent of a new moon is sighted.
      • Saudi Arabia's moon sighting committee of the Supreme Court announces the official date of Ramadan.
      • The Islamic year is 10 to 11 days shorter than the solar year and contains no intercalation

Passover in 2022 begins sundown April 15th and concludes April 23rd.

    • The determination of Passover is by the combination of the first full moon after the first vernal equinox, a time when each day is exactly the same in time of day.
    • Some have suggested that in the Torah, the date the 14th of Nisan is referred to as Passover while the week-long celebration is the Festival of Matzot.
    • Passover commemorates the story of the Jews' escape from Egypt. The passover in question is when the houses of the observant Israelites in captivity were "passed over" as Egypt's first-born children were killed
    • Passover observance variances include
      • Firstborn sons need to fast for Passover.
        • If there are no children, the oldest member of the household fasts.
        • If the firstborn is a daughter? That depends on the tradition of the community.
      • Passover lasts either seven or eight days.
        • The Torah says to celebrate Passover for seven days (the time between the Exodus and the parting of the Red Sea)
        • But many Jews outside of Israel celebrate for eight.

Holy Week for Christians begins with Palm Sunday (April 11th or 17th) and concludes with Easter Sunday (April 17th or April 23rd)

The eastern Orthodox Christian Church will observe Holy Week as

    • Palm Sunday (“Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem”April 17th
    • Good Friday April 21st
    • Easter Sunday April 23rd.
      • The date used for Easter was determined at the Council of Nicaea in 325 A.D.
      • It is on the Sunday following the paschal full moon, which is the full moon that falls on or after the spring equinox.
      • Orthodox Easter will usually fall later in the year than Western Christian Easter because Orthodox Easter uses the Julian calendar and the later uses the Gregorian calendar.
      • Many countries around the world celebrate Orthodox Easter like Romania, Republic of Macedonia, Lebanon, Cyprus, Greece, Ukraine, Bulgaria, and Russia.

The western Christian Church will observe Holy Week as

    • Palm Sunday April 11th
    • Good Friday April 15th
    • Easter Sunday April 17th
      • The reason for the two different calendars actually came from a miscalculation of astronomy.
      • Easter is observed on the first Sunday following the full moon that comes on or after the vernal equinox (March 21) (also known as the Spring Equinox or March Equinox), Thus Easter can take place as early as March 22 but no later than April 25.
      • According to EarthSky.org the Vernal Equinox occurs when the sun crosses over from south of the equator to north of the equator. The day the Vernal Equinox takes place can be predicted years in advance, meaning the day Easter Sunday is celebrated can also be predicted years in advance.  https://www.learnreligions.com/how-date-of-easter-is-calculated-542413

    * Ascension Day is officially celebrated on a Thursday on the 40th day of Easter (or 39 days after Easter Sunday).
